the floating point value "timer" is accurate to about 1/18 of a second

at the start:  T! = timer

at the end:    print  "elapssed:"; timer - T! ;"seconds"

more precision that that is dificult in interpreted basic, but in C I have
timer code accurate to better than 1 microsecond (by reading the registers
of the timer chip).
