BK :>SHe hasn't been shod? Tee Hee! Put on aluminum the first
BK :>time?
Nope...regular shoes and pads. She got loose the other night...rummaged
around my neighbor's yard....and threw a shoe. Bless my farrier...he was out
that afternoon, replaced the shoe and pad, and charged me zippo! I just love
this kid!! This was the 2nd time in one week that she's gotten out of the
pasture. I think it has something to do with being in a dry lot now, with
just hay for feed..she's always looking for something to eat!! Now, don't go
thinking I'm starving this horse...I'm not, but her stomach is her prime
concern and always has been (g). She has lost some weight on her diet, but
slowly and not a great deal, so it's not like she's not getting enough to
eat. I think she's really bored, and munching relieves the boredom.
Hopefully the weather will cooperate and I can put her back to work this
week. I'd worked her for 2 days before she pulled the shoe, and then gave
her a day off after...she was a little ouchy...then we got hit with 90+ and
high, high humidity, so I didn't work her. Today it's 60 this a.m. with
rain. New England weather is not conducive to horse training!!
BK :>Nice.. think we'll be fine the first time Tush gets a
BK :>pair.. a lot better then she did her first trim.. ;)
I've never had one minute of trouble with Fiddle and her feet. From day one
I worked on her feet...just lifting and cleaning. By the time her first trim
came around she was so used to having her feet worked on, she never batted an
eye. It also helped that I stood there shoving carrots into her while the
farrier worked on her (g). And, my farrier is a saint, and really has a way
with horses. He told me the other day that he was more concerned about
Fiddle and her laminitis than he would have normally been with other horses
he works on because he's known her since she was a baby, and sort of feels
like she's one of his own.
BTW, this carrot trick does work...any time she has something done that might
be unpleasant for her, I stand there and give her carrots through the whole
thing...shots, farrier work, the x-rays on her legs this summer, etc.
So, she associates those things with pleasantness (g).
BK :>My shoer takes no great pleasure in getting kicked.. and
BK :>Tush SURE pegged the shoer the first time she got shod! :)
Well, can't say I blame the poor guy (VBG).
