I'm afraid there is sometimes a bit of a difference between most
recommended products and what is the "best" quality high end products. I
know HSU a very good bargain for its price range, but is typically not best
sub out there. I'm less sure of the performance of the Mirage Bi-polar sub,
but I've heard a few good things and few bad things about it. My current
sub, a Definitive PF-1500 is pretty musical, even if not the fastest sub
around. Its 36dB/octave crossover blends very well with my AL-III ribbons.
If I'm going to upgrade subs, it's going to have to be significantly faster
on bottom octave transients (at least clean 1/16 notes at 20-30Hz) while
still retaining musicality and a good match with my mains. I'm afraid there
aren't a lot of subs out there (at least close to my price affordability
range) that can do that. Ideally, I would like a pair of Kinergetics
Research Towers, but they're a bit pricey at $3000/pair for the minis and
$4000/pair for the standard.... I think I will probably have to settle for
less...a lot less...for the time being.
Really, there aren't a whole lot of songs where I notice a problem.
I've really only noticed 1 track on 1 disc where there is a 30Hz Bass Drum
playing 1/8th triplets where it's less than perfect sounding. The ribbons
easily play the higher harmonics, but the fundamental is kind of sloppy.
1/8th notes are about the subs limit in the absolute bottom octave. Not many
songs have notes faster than at that octave...then again not many songs have
*anything* present at that octave, but it could still make things a little
sloppier than ideal with slower notes, although the room resonances are also
a factor. It's a weak spot I'd like to address eventually.
