Giant Danios! In fact, your tank should be more exciting with them. From
what I have been told, the cichlids and the danios have a natural
relationship. In the wild, the cichlids rely on the danios as sort of
burglar alarm. If they see the danios schools darting away, they know
something is coming. If the danios are schooling around, then all is clear.
Because of this, the cichlids know not to attack the danios.
I have also been able to raise a Synadontis in my african tank. His spiked
fins are enough defense to train the cichlids.
I had a pleco in there, but he was always hiding. Whenever he came out, they
beat the tar out of him.
