I'm not trying to restart this thread, I am just curious if your previous
work arounds also fixes this potential problem --or-- can you obtain the
code from Sparky to fix this?

Indeed, the QWK format will break (a bit) on January 1, 2000 because
the year is stored in YY format. This was done because PCBoard did it
and I used their format as a basis for QWK. So, the short answer is
yes, it will break, but only for those who sort their messages by date,
and no, I won't be working on a work-around for it.

Note that it says "will break for those who sort their messages by
date." I'm not sure of what he's talking about so I've asked for a
clarification.
