HD controllers can fail, too. Do you have an empty HD hanging around
somewhere? If so, put it in and install whatever OS you had on that
computer. Runs ok: the data in the original disk is corrupted (boot sector
/ whatever), and a re-install is in order. Does not run: hardware failure
-> off to the nearest parts shop.

actually broken)
