Replying to a message of JAY EMRIE to ROY J. TELLASON: GM>>> I suspect that Radio Shack (AKA Tandy in Aus) and Dick Smith GM>>> Electronics would both have closed in Australia if Woolworths, the GM>>> supermarket chain, hadn't bought them up. RJT>> Woolworth's is a supermarket chain there? They were (before they RJT>> closed down entirely) something else entirely here... And they RJT>> bought up both those other outfits? Weird! JE> Originally Woolworths was a dime store here - correct? F. W. Woolworth, general merchandise. Essentially the same thing as K-Mart or Target. AAMOF, back around 1970, Tandy Leather Products bought Lafayette Radio Shack (a large store and mail-order house) in New Jersey and Allied Radio Corp. (a similar operation in Chicago) and used that base to build their Radio Shack chain. I bought a Scottkit (H. H. Scott, better known for their audio equipment than their kits) AM/FM tuner/amplifier from Allied and a pair of Altec-Lansing speakers to go with it; still have them. ---* Origin: Bob's Soapbox, Plattsmouth, Nebraska, USA (1:379/103.104) SEEN-BY: 633/267 270 @PATH: 379/103 1 633/267 |
