There's another consideration as well. If you depend on hydrostatic
shock rather than shot placement, there's a whole lot less animal left
to bring back. The shock wave literally turns tissues to jelly by
rupturing cell membranes.
I know a guy who used to hunt deer with a .300 H & H. The results when
he got one were horrendous. I'm sure the deer didn't feel a thing, but
he had to wrap the deer in a tarp to drag it back.
