FYI, there is a way to disable NMI on many motherboards. Writing to port
0x70 (which is one of the ports used to access CMOS RAM) with the high bit
set causes NMI to be disabled on most modern motherboards. This standard
was set by IBM in the PS/2 series and was adopted by many other
manufacturers. Unfortunately, other good ideas from IBM, like the watchdog
timer, did not catch on.
