Hello All,
I am in the process the considering the purchase of a full size
or mini van. As some of you know, I need and use a scooter (Pride Legend,
4 wheeler) which I will need to be able to load into the van. I currently
use a Bruno Curb-sider, in the bed of a pick-up, and for the most part I
have been happy with it, so I would probably use one in the van.
Once again I am trying to tap into the collective wisdom of those here
on the Fido-net post-polio echo. Please send me your ideas pertaining
to the 'best' van to purchase. I will appreciate and consider any and
all information and opinions on the subject, including, preferred options
and features, brands and models of vans, and model years (new vs. used
vans.) This is such a major purchase, on my income at least, that I need all
the help, in making the right decision, that I can get.
Major considerations that affect my choice are that the van must
have a maximum amount of leg room, not only from the front of the seat to
the bulkhead, but also 'spread area' to the right of the gas peddle. The
engine hump inside some older full size vans is an obstacle to my comfort.
Front wheel vans seem to have less hump and therefore it seems more room is
available to stretch out, or rather 'spread out' while driving. The
second consideration is obvious, I must be able to load my scooter,
hopefully with the middle seat remaining installed.
I consider the following comfort options absolutely necessary.
The van must have power windows, locks, steering, brakes and mirrors,
also air conditioning, AM/FM, cassette, and cruise control. Have I left
out any that you find useful? In the safety area I feel I need ABS
brakes, window and mirror defrosters, enhanced suspension (with larger
tires,) and six cylinder engine. Is there more I should consider?
My driving evaluation counselor says that I should consider the
cost and possibility of future modification to the van, should my
condition deteriorate and they become necessary. A mobility specialist
says that I should get what suits my needs now and makes me feel good, and
worry about the costs of future mods when and if they become needed. He
argues that 'mobility' is more than just the ability to get from here to
there, but it also includes the right to feel good, about oneself, while
doing so. Me, being a realist, when I heard the first statement
agreed with it. Me, being a free spirit, when I heard the second statement
agreed with it too. Okay, so you all know now that I am a confused
individual, so I need your help. Thanks in advance.
