The newer netgears, and a few of the older ones have a power setting in the
config, so you can reduce the transmitted power at the base station to suit
your needs. My "N" has that feature.
My current Toshiba Laptop has a supplied utility that looks like a RADAR
screen, with "blips" showing all the viewable/connectable
wireless access points drifting around the screen at different distances
from the center (local computer) point. Connection is a drag/drop to the
blip, other than whatever autos you might have setup.
It also auto detects wired connection plugged in, and disables the internal
wireless and switches to the wired jack. Unplug the wired jack, and it
switches back. Nice for moving around the office and carrying the laptop
around.
