Not even close, 480p is the very minimal resolution these days for normal
stuff, much higher for movies.

Some of the larger UMPC's might do you.  They're far too expensive as you
say, but a used one might get cheap enough.

I have an Axim x50v with a 640x480 (actually 480x640 normally), but I
wouldn't even think of using it for watching video's, it's just for
emergency computer work and gps.  I have portable DVD player with a decent
screen, but it's not even close to pocket sized. (8.5" screen)
