A RARE GLIMPSE OF MARE ORIENTALE

Spectacular Mare Orientale is the youngest large basin on the Moon, but
it's centered just out of view beyond the western limb of the Moon.
Fortunately, favorable librations tip the Moon so that Orientale's main
rings and ancient lava flows are occasionally visible. The prime time for
viewing falls in December and January; the next opportunity occurs before
dawn on December 5th through 7th inclusive.

A LATE-NIGHT JUPITER OCCULTATION

On the morning of December 7th, the thick waning crescent Moon will rise
in the east around 2 a.m. local time with bright Jupiter shining close by
the Moon's sunlit side. As the pair rises higher in the sky, the Moon will
draw closer to the planet. Observers in eastern and central North America
can then watch as Jupiter disappears behind the bright lunar limb.

THE GEMINIDS ARE COMING

The Geminid meteors, due to peak this year on the night of December 13-14,
may be the best annual shower in a typical year, even surpassing the
Perseids of August. This year there's no glare from moonlight to worry
about because the Moon is a two-day-old crescent setting early in the
evening sky.

SKY AT A GLANCE

At dawn on December 5th, Mars is close to brilliant Venus in the east. To
