From: "Frank Haber"

1. You know me. Separate hardware for separate jobs; no single point of
failure. I'd keep the DSL 'modem' separate, and maybe owned by the ISP, to
avoid disputes.

2. Let me know if you decide to fiddle with full open-WRT, quagga, nmap,
asterisk, IPchains, and hot and cold running kernel rebuilds. I love to
watch guys in hair shirts scratch themselves. It's good free entertainment.

The most Linux-y I've gotten is the Hyper-WRT family for the classic
Linksys 54G. These firmwares are typically free, but not exactly open
source. The builds are typically by one guy, although I think you can get
source. The guy changes from time to time, as each tires in turn of the
game. It's the critical mass of critical users that's turned this unit into
a sweet-performing bargain.

The only CLI is via hamstrung telnet from inside. There is the usual
Webmin, using Linksys's web face, and built, like all other features, on
top of Linksys's open source code.

I've found ALL of them more stable than the Linksys factory ware, and the
VPN definitely works. The box doesn't have the horsepower for two heavy
VPN users at once though, if that's your aim.
