Well, the "Defiant" is the prototype "Defiant" class vessel.  It is the
first and (as yet) only ship of it's class.  It was designed by Sisko after
the Battle at Wolf 359 when he was assigned to a shipyard (can't remember
which).  It was shown to be overpowered for its size during testing, and was
shelved after the Borg threat was solved.  Mostly forgotten until Sisko got
it for assistance at DS9.
