Fair enough, but you are not successfully backing up some open files (e.g.
the registry of the currently logged-on user, if any). For many systems,
this is not a problem.

On Windows 2000 and later, the built-in Backup has a "System
State" option that backs up all operating system open files, such as
the registry (and Active Diectory, if a domain controller). I believe that
third-party backup agents simply call some API to invoke a System State
backup. Logically, there doesn't appear to be a reason that the API
couldn't work over the network, but apparently it doesn't (i.e. a System
State backup has to be run on the local computer).

It's going to be quite a war. It seems increasingly obvious that
Microsoft's (and others') long-term strategy for revenue is going to
involve DRM. Various scumware is going to force many people to regard DRM
and its associated "trusted computing" as their only hope of
salvation.
