1\25 ISS On-Orbit Status 25-01-2003
Part 1 of 2

ISS On-Orbit Status 1/25/03

All ISS systems continue to function nominally, except as noted
previously or below. Regular Saturday "off-duty" schedule for the
crew.

After wake-up (1:00am EST), FE-1 Nikolai Budarin completed the daily
checkup, including watering, of the BIO-5 Rasteniya-2/Lada-2
("Plants-2") experiment, which researches plant growth and development
under space flight conditions.

CDR Ken Bowersox and FE-2/SO Don Pettit continued the second round of
the renal (kidney) stone prevention experiment, which started
yesterday. Pettit's second day of the regimen required him to collect
urine samples in the course of the day besides diet logging. Sox began
his turn by initiating his food and fluid intake log.

Bowersox, Budarin and Pettit then joined in the weekly 3-hr.
housecleaning of the station, which includes removal of food waste
products, periodic cleaning of compartments with vacuum cleaner, and
wet cleaning of surfaces.

Budarin conducted the regular inspection of the BRPK air/condensate
separator of the SRVK water processing system. [The BRPK separator
contains porous cermet hydrophilic ("water attracting") tubes through
which the gas-liquid mixture from the heat exchanger moves. They
separate the air from the condensate, but when the separator exceeds
its service life or malfunctions, incomplete separation of the
atmospheric condensate occurs, and the water then collects under the
"sheet" of porous fluoroplastic. This is the main focus of the regular
inspection.]

The daily routine SOSh life support system maintenance was done by
Bowersox, while Pettit prepared the IMS (inventory management system)
auto export delta file for downlinking.

At 11:00, the crew was timelined to set up the Russian TV equipment
and then downlink a joint message of greeting to the Presidium (Viktor
G. Shevchenko) and members of the Security, Defense, and Law
Enforcement Academy in Moscow,. [The greeting, which apparently had
been postponed from 1/11, was intended for delivery at the gala
meeting of the Academy at the "October" movie/concert hall in Moscow,
to be attended by President Putin.]

Don Pettit's tool survey video and inventory of consumables, a "job
jar" task list item, has thus far been very useful to many MCC-H ops
planners. More is desired, and the task will remain on the list until
arrival of Progress 10P (2/4).

At about midnight last night, ISS attitude control was handed over to
the Russian MCS (motion control system) thrusters for maneuvering from
solar-oriented XPOP (x-axis perpendicular to orbit plane) to
earth-"fixed" LVLH TEA (local vertical/local horizontal/torque
equilibrium attitude). Control authority then returned to USOS CMG
momentum management.

Installation of the window in the Node starboard hatch (toward the
Airlock), a task list item, is scheduled for tomorrow.

Science Update (Expedition Six -- 8th):

The crew was thanked for observing and shaking the InSPACE samples,
which was invaluable to the PD (payload developer) in assessing the
viability of the samples for upcoming processing. Also, the crew this
week completed the final ZCG run of this increment and the HRF GASMAP
90-day checkout. The third FOOT session went extremely well this week;
the FOOT team is reviewing the data. The ground also thanked the crew
for their hard work and patience in upgrading the software on the
EXPRESS Racks this week.

Extra-Vehicular Activity Radiation Monitors (EVARM): EVARM has some
new activities planned which entail background readings throughout the
station. These activities will enhance the PI's (principal
investigator's) science. New procedures are to be up-linked soon.

GASMAP/Pulmonary Function in Flight (PuFF): The next PuFF session is
planned for early February.

Renal (Kidney) Stone Experiment: New round has begun.

Human Research Facility/Workstation (HRF WS): Continuing.

Ultrasound: n/a

Foot/Ground Reaction Forces During Space Flight (FOOT): All in all
another solid collection and good performance by the hardware.
Although Bowersox had to use the original Montage file, no science
data was impacted. The Foot team has received the data from the last
session. The next session is in early February.

Pore Formation and Mobility Investigation (PFMI): Complete for Inc. 5.
On hold pending MSG PDC (power distribution controller) and ESEM3
(exchangeable standard electronic module 3) replacement. Will remain
in MSG until further notice.

Space Acceleration Measurement System (SAMS): SAMS continues to
collect acceleration data for vibratory characterization of the
microgravity environment.

Microgravity Acceleration Measurement System (MAMS): MAMS is back up
and running nominally after the ER#1 software upgrade on Monday.
Continues measurement of microgravity environment in the quasi-steady
regime for general characterization.

Protein Crystal Growth-Single Locker Thermal Enclosure System
(PCG-STES): Temperatures are nominal. PCG-STES is currently in
heating mode.

Investigating the Structure of Paramagnetic Aggregates from Colloidal
Emulsions (InSPACE): Findings from the coil monitoring procedure that
was performed permitted the Glovebox Investigator and Project
Scientist to determine that the samples in 5 of the 6 coil assemblies
remain viable for operations. The video provided of the vials prior to
and after the procedure was excellent and served as a valuable product
together with the narrative description to the InSPACE Team.

Materials ISS Experiment (MISSE): In progress. Deployed outside.
Nominal and collecting data. Was photographed by the crew during the
1/15 EVA.

Zeolite Crystal Growth (ZCG): ZCG has finished science operations for
Inc 6. The ground team appreciates all the extra care and effort Sox
gave the experiment, which will enhance science results.

EarthKAM (EK): Anxiously awaiting resumption of activities next week
(1/28).
