OK, the cable is suspect, and unrecoverable hangs ceased after removing and
re-inserting the SCSI controller and all connectors. There is still the
occasional (every few hours) SCSI bus reset though.
Should a specialist cable maker be able to make a decent internal SCSI cable?

No, none is.

Buslogic suggested that it might be a problem with the particular Quantum
drive (model 34300). Unfortunately Quantum provide no direct source of
technical support feedback.
I also am unhappy with having a 7200 rpm drive in the server. I'd prefer to
get one of the new IBM 5400 rpm 4.3 Gig drives as soon as they become
available.
