Why?  I'm sure that when some sailor said "I sailed the 7 seas"
he was referring to the known 7 seas at that time.  Things are too
convoluted mowadays.  For example, a relatively new word has sprung into
the news media lexicon (although it was there before).  They are now using
the word pandemic instead of widespread, which is one less syllable, but
proves the media is full of blowhards with a thesaurus.
