Yea, that's how I do it IF it need intervention. All the backup schedules
are set and left. Just rotate tapes. On the SQL, I walk in each AM and
change a tape. On the Nashville server, it's done on Friday AM. The SQL
is a full backup every night, and the Nashville one is a full backup on
Monday AM (2AM), and incremental Tuesday thru Friday.
Both pull files and such from other machines in each of their respective
domains. The SQL one, handles 2 domains, CM and Compendia, now down to 3
machines. The Nashville one handles Compendiamusic, (these are all
internal domains), and pulls files from 4 servers. Everybody has their My
Documents folders mapped to a private Network shared folder for their own
documents, so they all get backed up. Some users with Laptops have the
OffLine Files function working, so they have a local copy of all their
documents with them when they travel. The folders re-sync when they get
back in the office and are back on the local lan.
The only "problem" I've really had in the past is a
flakey/failing drive on one of the raids, but dropping in 3 new drives
cleaned that up. (I figured that if 1 out of the 3 failed, then there was
a greater chance that the other 2 might go bad soon, so I ordered 3
replacement drives, and swapped them in one at a time, allowing the raid to
rebuild. I've sent the one failing drive back to Hitachi/IBM for a
replacement (it's on the way back), and have the other 2 as emergency
spares incase one of the new 3 go out).
