Robert there is a very good reason for this.  At least in the Air Force 
all training is and has been for quite awhile in Tri-Cycle Gear Jets.  
My first experience with this was a young lad that worked for me.  He 
wanted to check out in the Aero Club T-34.  Even that was a step with 
the Prop, Manifold Pressure, Mixture etc.  Shucks he didn't even have to 
worry about the Conventional Gear.  Try checking out F-100 Pilots into 
the DeHavland Beaver.  If you weren't trained that way first and pay 
attention to what you are doing and understand the principle then you're 
gonna lose.
