Hello Jasen!
Quoting Jasen's message:
RB>> C:\4DOS @C:\4DOS\4DOS.INI /F /D /K C:\4DOSEXEC.BTM /D /K AUTOEXEC
JB> ah!, that looks right, DOS is loading 4dos in secondary shell mode

JB> a secondary (EXIT-able) shell.
Nope, it is not possible from 4DOS to exit to COMMAND.COM - in facts, I
looked at what is loaded in memory and I cannot find any trace of
COMMAND.COM. Here is what I find (doing MEM /C):
Total Conventional Upper Memory
-------------- -------------- --------------
SYSTEM 40,752 (40K) 9,696 (9K) 31,056 (30K)
HIMEM 1,168 (1K) 1,168 (1K) 0 (0K)
EMM386 4,320 (4K) 4,320 (4K) 0 (0K)
4DOS 8,128 (8K) 432 (0K) 7,696 (8K)
UNDELETE 13,616 (13K) 13,616 (13K) 0 (0K)
XMSDSK 528 (1K) 0 (0K) 528 (1K)
CLOCK 432 (1K) 0 (0K) 432 (1K)
SBIDE 14,432 (14K) 0 (0K) 14,432 (14K)
IFSHLP 2,864 (2K) 0 (0K) 2,864 (3K)
MOUSE 14,768 (14K) 0 (0K) 14,768 (14K)
SETVER 832 (1K) 0 (0K) 832 (1K)
BLANK-IT 880 (1K) 0 (0K) 880 (1K)
ANSI 2,672 (3K) 0 (0K) 2,672 (3K)
MSCDEX 32,528 (32K) 0 (0K) 32,528 (32K)
Free 723,056 (706K) 624,320 (610K) 98,736 (96K)
As you can see from the above, COMMAND.COM is not in memory.
And if I type "EXIT" nothing happens - I am not returned to a MS-DOS prompt.
JB> What does the /D switch do? (nothing here)
I just used it because it was being used by MS-DOS v7.0 when I tested booting
my system without neither CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT
Go figure...
Sincerely, Raymond Beriau.
