I agree with the energy dump hypothesis, but generally for skinny targets 
like frontal torsos and such.  If you're talking about a quartering shot 
into a mule deer, you've got 2-3 feet of flesh to rip through, and a deep 
penetrating bullet is probably going to do better overall, partly because 
of less temp cavity meat destruction.
