[May Day]
The earliest May Day celebrations appeared in pre-Christian times, with
the festival of Flora, the Roman Goddess of flowers, and the Walpurgis
Night celebrations of the Germanic countries.

For one thing, from the bible description of the era. The shepards were in
the fields with their flocks, means that it was either spring or summer.
If it were in December, they and their flocks wouldn't be in the cold,
cold fields. Of course, one has to believe the bible only is one is a
christian.
