RD> I'm using a PRO-51 and Radio Shack's all-band mobile magnetic mount.
RD> At times I can pick up 162.475 and 162.425 on the handheld using the
RD> rubber ducky antenna. Of course the Kansas City and St. Joseph
RD> stations are audible all the time.
RD> Funny thing is, that night I could hear 5 different stations and we
RD> got five different forecasts for this area -- none of them right
RD> except for the one that called for a 30% chance of rain. It didn't
RD> rain at all, so they were the closest. The others said it was
RD> going to rain.
RD> I thought they all used the same information. Go figure.
I can pick up at least 2 stations on my BC200XLT with the original
rubber duck. I agree with you about the quality of the forecasts. The
problem in my area is not inaccurate forecasts, but the fact that they
are badly delayed. I have heard many times of a storm being in
such-and-such an area, when the TV radar shows it has already moved 30
miles or more. Furthermore, I have _never_ heard a tornado warning
being broadcast by NOAA within 20 minutes of the tornado being spotted.
When nasty weather or tornado conditions pop up, I tune in to the ham
repeater in Wilmington, NC on 146.8200. The information there is much
more timely.
That's one of the reasons why I went to Rat Shack today and had the
fella behind the counter order a copy of "Now You're Talking" (and I
also got a free '97 Rat Shack catalog just for asking). And I'm
learning (AAAARRRRRGGGGGHHHHHHHHHH!!!!) Morse. :-)
