Oh Goodie. Why do people LET them install all that "crap" on
their computer when they get cable? NONE of it is necessary.

More info on what I found. Their 12 year old son got a D-Link 604 router
for Christmas, so that he could keep the computer on line while he also
uses X-Box live. Well, he goes to install the Router, and that's when all
heck broke out. Turns out, when I got there, he had also installed Zone
Alarm Pro, the 30 day free trial.....plus he had the Windows Firewall
enabled, AND his father, from their time prior to getting the cable modem,
had AOL 9, full security package installed. That new software (AOL9), has
a port manager utility, that takes over the control of the router!!!!
Reading the blurb in the help for it, it says it controls ports to allow IM
and other AOL programs to "connect" better. Plus, his Dad had
also installed the AOL for Broadband package. (He works for Office Depot,
and gets AOL for free
.) It took 45 minutes to disable all the cascaded firewalls, and
security stuff. Initially, NOTHING would connect to anything, as all the
firewalls and security apps were popping up one on top of the other asking
permission to allow various programs to connect to the internet. Once I
got all that crap disabled, the 2.8 gig P4 started to RUN like a 2.8gig
P4!!!!

The kid at least had installed and running, Spybot, and AdAware, and scans
showed the computer fully clean. He uses FireFox as his browser now. The
reason he claims that they still had/have AOL installed, is that his Dad
still has files stored in his AOL account. I showed them that they did not
have to run the AOL software at all, that he could go to www.aol.com, and
log in from there, and get to his mail and "stuff".

The real killer, is that AOL and Comcast do NOT get along well, software wise.

Oh, he did have the router setup and locked down properly though .
