Cannot you just ssh to it from a normal PC with a big monitor?
ssh -Y pi@IP_ADDRESS
sudo su -

You need to know the pie's ip address of course.
ifconfig will tell you on the small monitor.
Best is to give it a fixed IP address anyways.
