WABC in NYC is a 50,000 watt AM station whose antenna is located in the
middle of a residential area in New Jersey.
http://www.musicradio77.com/transm.html
About thirty years ago, one of its residential neighbors (let's call him
"Fred") erected a resonant coil in his backyard tuned to 770kHz.
Fred was sucking in enough power to supplement the heating of his house
during the winter.
All was going fine until the WABC Station Engineer notice a change in the
station's radiation pattern. A little sleuthing discovered the coil in
Fred's yard.
WABC protested, Fred said, "I am just listening to your station."
Long story short, Fred agreed to take down the coil and WABC paid Fred an
undisclosed monthly amount of money.
