If you do safe hex, chances of being infected are low, yes.
If you suspect a file, quarantine it for a couple of weeks,
then submit it to http://virusscan.jotti.org/en before using it.
The detection will probably be lower than real life, as these
sites use AV defs only, do not do heuristics(they all run under
Linux).
