I would spend the $100 to buy a new dsl modem. It's a task best done by the
hardware modem leaving the machine free from direct connections. (not much
on a dsl modem to hack at compared to a PC).
Perhaps it's time for you to consider going to 802.11g wireless (or at
least looking at dsl modems that do 100baseT and 11g).
