I can't give you an authoritative answer because I've only occasionally tinkered with this stuff. However, I have moved hard drives (in removable trays) from machine A to machine B etc. Under NT4 this was quite likely to be successful (i.e. it would boot on B). Under W2000 and later it was quite likely to NOT boot if there was the slightest difference between the motherboards in A and B. To state the bleeding obvious, make sure you have a REALLY GOOD AND TESTED backup of your data before doing anything!
