From what I have read, it actually started out with indentured workers,
and slavery was adopted later. It was adopted in the English colonies
in North America because it was widespread in many other parts of the world.

South Africa faced international sanctions for years because of the
racial policies. Many South Africans preferred to endure the hardship
imposed by sanctions than to turn their country's administration over to
black rule. They felt they had reason to be concerned, considering the
models that they saw in the rest of the continent. African countries are
notoriously corrupt. There have been a lot of recent reports of grand
scale corruption in the new South Africa.
If you think South Africa is corrupt, I can't help but wonder how you
feel about countries like Uganda. Back in the 70's, they kicked all
asians out of the country.  It sounds like a racist regime to me. About
the same time, they underwent a civil war where people of various
ethnic groups throughout the country battled with other tribal groups.
That same sort of tribal warfare is going on in the neighboring countries
of Rwanda and Burundi where different ethnic/racial groups are committed
acts of genocide against each other.

In your estimation, which societies in the world today are the most racist?
My friend who recently spent time in asia thinks it's a tough call between
Japan and India.  My son who has been living in Uganda saw many incidents
of racism committed by asians against his Ugandan co workers, including
an assault. 
If you are really concerned about racism, and you do harp about it
constantly, why do you carry on only about racism by whites?
