I think you're right.  I saw a longer news article on this subject posted
in one of the anime newsgroups with the comment that it would be cool if
they showed Cowboy Bebop (the main character there is named Spike).  I think
the longer article actually said what you did above.  By keeping the same
initials TNN, the name change didn't go over as well as it could have.
Some people still associated TNN with The Nashville Network and not The
National Network.  The name change is probably to get rid of any further
confusion and because they've decided to specifically target males as their
viewing audience in the same way Lifetime and I think a couple other
stations target females as their audience.  Why they chose "Spike TV" as
their new name, I think the article I saw said something about they thought
it would be kind of cool to have a man's name as the station's name.  Why
they made that decision and why they chose Spike over some other name though,
I couldn't tell you.
