Correct ... and I don't think there's much about that aspect in US textbooks.
 
I remember from Krustshev's memoirs that the Russian people were just as
scared/opposed from/to nucelar war than anyone in the west and had Russians as
well as Americans maintained better relations it would not have needed to have
happened.
