   I've visited this  one many times: install them in their own root
directory and have them access files only in non-spaced directories.  In
some cases,  a SUBST drive helps out.

   I think they were just trying to force the issue of supporting long
filenames.   I install everything in 'Programs' myself just to minimize the
size of the registry:  think 27,000 registry entries multiplied by the
difference in number of characters X 2 for Unicode.
