We called 'em a "five and ten",  probably the same sort of thing
you're talking about.  The last one of those around here was a McCrory (?)
store that's now gone,  but before they did the lunch counter went.  I can
still remember the Woolworth's I used to go to as a kid,  right next to a
W. T. Grant,  a similar chain.  Both long gone...
