| subject: | Re: Machinename, Username the Same? |
From: "Frank Haber" 1. I didn't do the net setup on any of the existing machines. 2. The setup was once all 98 clients, and originally, ALL the machines bore ident user- and machine-names. This was done with the SBS wizard and floppies, which I think install MS Proxy 2 and lots of evil RAS- and FAX-sharing stuff. 3. Most of the clients were later replaced with 2kWS machines of the SAME user and machine names, somehow. 4. I tried this on XP and got stopped cold. Didn't try the commandline, though (thanks, John). I'll play with that next week. Isn't it strange how the idea of identical users and machines is just instinctively anathema to me, but seemed natural to hubby? Funny, this interface design, eh? I've never seen a naming error message on boot in this shop. 5. I used a more sensible username on the XP machine I set up. I kept the old (identical) machine name and server-logon account name. I did the usual thing of manually installing the proxy client, and everything came up. 6. (Another little weirdness) I'd named the C partition on the new machine. Then I noticed that this shop used unnamed partitions, and a few mapped drives on boot. I blew away my volume name, added the mappings, and everything worked. Hours later, I saw that the view of the new box from all the other machines included the *erased new volume name*. It hadn't gone away. --- BBBS/NT v4.01 Flag-5* Origin: Barktopia BBS Site http://HarborWebs.com:8081 (1:379/45) SEEN-BY: 633/267 270 5030/786 @PATH: 379/45 1 106/2000 633/267 |
