RS>JD> TM*Has anybody used any of the lightning detectors while out on their
RS>JD> boats?
RS>Not in a boat, but the Cesna 182 I used to fly had one as part of

RS>Vendor now sells them for boats? Sheesh, those money hungry
RS>suckers will come up with just about anything to make a buck.
John, if it is an aviation style lightning detector, be aware that the
device will indicate on a radar-style scope, the radial of the lightning
flash (which might be pretty useless unless you are going straight) and
the apparent intensity. The apparent intensity is a combination of the
true intensity and the distance, and is indicated on the scope by
distance from the center. In other words, a big flash which is a long
ways off will appear the same as a small flash very close to you. The
flashes paint a spot on the scope which hangs around for a while so that
you can detect patterns of flashes indicating a storm. If you are
twisting and turning you will paint a blur on the scope - in theory you
could paint a ring on the scope if you did a 360.
You can get about the same information from an AM radio tuned to a
frequency with no station there, and listening to the static....
