| subject: | Re: IP Masquerading Apps For Windows? |
From: John Beckett Randall Parker wrote in message news:: > Well, suppose the box on the internet is running Win2k. How would you do NAT/IP > Masquerading? I agree with Geo's comment that $100 on a new DSL box that has built-in NAT and firewall would be better. Yes, you would spend some time banging your head on it, but the result would be much more satisfactory from a security, reliability and performance POV. Using a Windows box for ICS certainly works, but the computer has to be switched on. The user at that computer has to NOT run some app that exhausts the CPU. I would not be comfortable placing a W2000 box directly on the Internet these days. XP SP2 probably ok, particularly if firewall enabled. Anyway, here is an outline of an answer to your question: In W2000 computer, you need two network cards. NIC1 connects to the DSL modem, to the Internet. NIC2 connects to a hub/switch, with other home computers connected to the same device. In the Properties for NIC1, you enable ICS (Internet Connection Sharing) on the Sharing tab. (It really is NIC1 - the one going to the Internet.) The above changes the computer: NIC2 has IP 192.168.0.1. The computer runs a mini-DHCP server and acts as a DNS proxy. Other home computers can be assigned manual IP settings, or can simply be told to obtain an IP address automatically. Each will have IP 192.168.0.x, and default gateway and DNS server will be 192.168.0.1.
