Yes, I habe also problems with the *.msg areas, but only with msged32 for DOS.
With the normal DOS version the following things are ok.

If I start msged and I don't scan the areas, then I go in a *.msg area,
there is no message into.

I must go back with ESC. If go again in the area, the messages are there.

If I start msged and I scan all areas with shift * then in the arealist
stands 0 in every columm of the primary Netmailarea.
