It is as safe for the alternator as hooking the charger directly to the
battery.
Yes it would work.
I don't think it is a good idea to run 2 amps min through the battery
for extended periods of time.  How long are you intending to leave it
on?  You can "boil" the battery dry if you leave it on all winter, for
example.  -Skip
