ML> let me get this straight...

ML> trumpet winsock is a windows winsock (i know this from experiance)

Yes.

ML> arachne is using a dos based "winsock"???

No. The winsock is associated only with the Win applications. The
sequence of moves is as follows:

Arachne DOS Win CuteFTP, Opera, or Netscape
. \ | /
. Trumpet Winsock

That's going from left to right or from right to left.

CuteFTP, Opera and Netscape all use Trumpet Winsock to make the
connection. But apparently TWS and Arachne connect to the
internet in different ways, as going from one end of the
above string to the other doesn't work for the same connection.

EXAMPLE 1: opening a connection with Arachne, then quitting Arachne
WITHOUT CLOSING THE CONNECTION, then opening Windoze and any of
CuteFTP, Opera, or Netscape will cause Trumpet Winsock to attempt
to make the connection, which it does by closing the existing
connection and re-dialing. Hitting Cancel as soon as TWS is
called, before it can disconnect and redial, causes CuteFTP or
Opera or Netscape to quit and drops me back to the Program
Manager.

EXAMPLE 2: opening a connection with CuteFTP or Opera or
Netscape, then quitting the program and hitting Cancel before TWS
disconnects, then closing Windoze and starting Arachne gives me
the dial-up page. Skipping this and trying to open something on
the 'net gives an error message that no connection exist, EVEN
THOUGH I HAVE NOT DISCONNECTED.

To prove that the connection still exists, in example 1 above, I
can exit Win, and re-open Arachne, and I find it works as normal
without the need to re-establish the connection.

And in example 2, I can quit Arachne, open Win, and I can open
any one of CuteFTP, Opera or Netscape, and it works as normal,
also without the need to re-establish the connection.

ML> sorry, i've not played with arachne... maybe i should? if so, it would
 ML> be on a win98se box...

AFAIAW the whole idea of Arachne is that you don't need Windows,
or gigabytes of RAM, or a faster-than-light processor.

To me the thought of anyone wanting to run it from a Win DOSbox
is quite weird. But I guess you could do that if you really want
to. It just seems like a tremendous waste of resources...

ML> exactly what tcp/ip networking drivers are you attempting to use,
 ML> please... details are necessary...

If you mean with Arachne, just what was in the package.

This is the list of .COMs and .EXEs that came with it. CORE.EXE
is the "heart" of Arachne. I think TERMIN.COM or MINITERM.EXE is
the one that does the connection. Probably TCPPORT.EXE is the
driver.

COMTOOL.COM TERMIN.COM
APM.EXE CORE.EXE CWSDPMI.EXE DJPEG32.EXE EPPPD.EXE
INSIGHT.EXE MINITERM.EXE	PLANY.EXE PNG2BMP.EXE UNARJ.EXE
UUDECODE.EXE UUENCODE.EXE WWWMAN.EXE TCPPORT.EXE
