No, the PC is a laptop. I finally resigned myself to using the XP CD
recovery console. 

And Glenn- I'll look for that defragger. I've been using Diskkeeper, and it
does have a boot option, but it won't defrag the swapper without contiguous
space.

Unfortunately, this didn't resolve the issue, so I have a new thread to start.
