======================================================================== * * * SKY & TELESCOPE's SKYWATCHER'S BULLETIN - October 5, 2004 * * * ======================================================================== Welcome to S&T's Skywatcher's Bulletin. More information on the items below is available on our Web site, SkyandTelescope.com, at the URLs provided. (If the links don't work, just manually type the URLs into your Web browser.) Clear skies! ======================================================================== AN ECLIPSING BINARY IN THE TRAPEZIUM Every 65.4 days the eclipsing binary star Theta 1 Orionis A dims. It's the westernmost of the four bright stars making up the Orion Nebula's famous Trapezium. The eclipse takes roughly 20 hours to complete. At mideclipse (which lasts 2.5 hours) the star is about 1 magnitude fainter than normal. http://SkyandTelescope.com/observing/objects/variablestars/ ___--------------------------------------------------------------------- SPOT VESTA (AND URANUS) Two solar-system bodies just below naked-eye brightness can be found with binoculars in eastern Aquarius on October and November evenings. The minor planet 4 Vesta loops through the dim "water streams" pouring from Aquarius 's bucket. Uranus, which is 10 to 13 times farther away, moves much more slowly as it glows at magnitude 5.8 south of Aquarius's elbow. http://SkyandTelescope.com/observing/objects/asteroids/ ___--------------------------------------------------------------------- PARTIAL SOLAR ECLIPSE FOR ALASKA AND HAWAII Right at sunset on the 13th (local date), three-fourths of the Sun will be covered for western Alaska, and nearly half for Hawaii. The complete partial, with mideclipse at 2:59 Universal Time on October 14th, will be visible from Japan, Korea, and Manchuria. http://SkyandTelescope.com/observing/objects/eclipses/article_80_1.asp ___--------------------------------------------------------------------- OCTOBER'S IDEAL LUNAR ECLIPSE Mark the date! On October 27th the full Moon will undergo a deep total eclipse lasting for 1 hour 22 minutes, when it will be high in the eastern sky after dark for most observers in the Americas. http://SkyandTelescope.com/observing/objects/eclipses/article_1340_1.asp ___--------------------------------------------------------------------- SKY AT A GLANCE Venus is the bright "Morning Star" shining in the east before and during dawn.
