With the diffuser insert it covers even moderate wide angle lenses, too.
Don't know the parameters which apply to your use of fill flash but, if the
camera doesn't require auto metering under its own control, then the 285
might be just what the doctor ordered. It has both manual and auto modes
and a variety of power output settings ranging from full down to 1/16th of
that amount at the true film speed setting and functions with independent
film speed settings which allow you almost unlimited control of fill
strength from closeups to perhaps 20 feet or so outside in direct sunlight.
Still have a pair of 285s. Have used these Vivitars for many years with
complete satisfaction on all cameras having between the lens shutters.
Those with focal plane shutters impose restrictions with electronic flash
due to need for full opening window to film and that's usually marked 'X'
(for electronic flash), and even those, indoors, where I could easily
control the ambient light factor. Am now using the 285s with the digital
cameras as well. The limited option of f/stops on digitals are still within
satisfactory range, indoors, and on some digitals with manual settings for
outdoor applications..
