SG> Here's the biggest point: so far, we've had almost the least amount
SG> of terrorism in the free world. Those places with more terrorism
SG> have imposed tough laws, but they have still had more terrorism than
SG> us. Just look at Ireland or the West Bank. Obviously the laws aren't
SG> addressing the root cause, and so are ineffective.
Those laws are *contributing* to the terrorism. Politically motivated
terrorism always arise from real grievences of some sort. In Ireland,
Catholics *are* discriminated against. Rather than address that problem,
the British government has tried to impose more controls. The result is
more bitterness and more people who are willing to support the IRA. You
see the same thing anywhere that politically motivated terrorism is
encountered.
Please do not draw the conclusion that I support terrorism, the IRA, the
PLO or anything of the sort. I condemn any person or any movement that
draws innocent civilians into the conflict. I am simply pointing out the
fact that adding to political oppression to fight terrorism is like
trying to put out a fire by dousing it with gasoline.
