Maybe he's not listening, it's been pretty quiet. I can claim it
was all your fault.

Was it Verne who wrote the Victorian time-machine story we know?
He didn't write about another incident when a Scots literary
group dedicated to the writings of Robert Burns sent one of their
younger members back to retrieve Robbie for an evening's meeting.
It was arranged that after the initial dropoff they'd be able to
send the time machine back three times, on the hour, for the pickup.
The first time came and went, empty. As did the second. With
considerable worry, the third and last time they sent the machine
back, and when it reappeared out tumbled the young member, an
elderly gent, and a couple "painted ladies". All in some disarray,
all more than a little inebriated. The ladies of the literary
society were much affronted, and the gentleman President sputtered
out a question to the young member why he'd brought this about. To
which Robbie said: "Och, laddie, ha'e ye ne'er heard of the pair
o' doxies of time travel?"

I think it was reported in an old April issue of Analog.
