Just had a talk with Douglas Baders widow and I've just heard that Max
Stienhoff (sp) passed away along with a few others.
I had the pleasure of briefly knowing Max in the past years. He flew with the
German Eagle Squadron during WW II. He was a gentleman with a supperb sense
of humor in lue of his massive injuries (burns) suffered when his ME-262 went
in shortly after take off during the later part of the war.
In fact his nickname at one time was "NATOFACE" since he recovered and had
subsequent plasic surgeries in NATO hospitals.
We hit if off because I'd also been fairly badly burned year ago (although
*nowhere* near the injuries suffered by Max), so we both knew what this was
like and we were both horsemen.
Max was one hell of a guy. He'll be missed.
I hope where ever Max is.. he's got a good plane, a full load of gas.. and a
great horse waiting for him when he lands.
