Oh boy, you just filled in a whole bunch of gaps, thank you!!!

We use a thing called "Advantage Database Server" that lets us
talk to .DBF files as if they were a real database.  (Well, up to a
point... but still better than nothing.)  So I guess this "NLM"
thing is what allows it to run on Novell?   (One feature of Advantage is
that it actually
enables something other than file-serving to happen on the server.)

I have no idea whether we can theoretically control locking, but I will check it out.
