"MPEG Layer-3 audio compression", to give it it's full name.
"MP3" is the filename extension of that type of file.

There are DOS utilities to convert WAV's and back again,
and if you've got a Pentuim 100 or better, and running
either Win95 or WinNT4, the archives can be played back
directly (i.e. I haven't seen any DOS/OS2/etc players).

There are a few dozen 1GB+ internet home pages in the USA
full of the things... and with the average audio CD compressing
down to about 40MB, that's a *lot* of CD's.

BTW, they are hidden from the usual search engines (presumably
to keep the record companies away!), netmail or email me if
you want the URL's.  There's even a search engine set up just
for MP3's - type in the name of your favourite song/artist,
and listen or download away... at CD quality :-)
